In Waukegan, Illinois in 1992, Holly Staker, 11 years old, was raped and murdered while babysitting. An informant led the police to Juan Rivera who was 19 and a former special education student. Rivera was convicted of burglary and had an electronic monitoring at the time of the murder. When the investigators initially questioned him, he denied committing the crime.
The reported crime date was in the year 1984 and he was convicted in 1987. On October 3, 1984, a 15 year old girl, Kristina Hickey was walking on her way home from a choir performance in Park Forest, Illinois. Two days later, her body was found behind a mall.
The killings began in the summer of 1984 when the first known murder of 79 year old Jennie Vincow occurred. The stabbing murder and sexual assault occurred outside of her home. It took a while before the police found out who was behind the killings due to the clues not being revealing enough at the crime scene towards the start. A shoe print was the only clue that the police had at first. A lot of the crimes done were very similar (i.e. murder and rape) causing the police to think that they all could perhaps be related.

Stephen Akinmurele was a suspected serial killer, of Nigerian descent, charged with murdering five elderly people between 1995 and 1998.
