The War Games were games where you had to capture the enemy’s flag. You had to do whatever it takes to win, even “kill”. Karl received a silver medal for his bravery and courage. One day after Hitler Youth, Karl’s mother received a letter informing them that their father had died in combat. Karl’s mother went into a state of shock and became very ill.
World War II was a difficult time in history to stable and believe in a brighter future. In England, Prime Minister Winston Churchill provided the courageous voice for the people not only in England, but others who were terrorized by the ruthless and barbaric actions by the Nazi party. In Winston Churchill’s moving call-to-arms speech Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat from 1940, Churchill appeals intensely to all feelings, logic, and uses pretentious diction through emotional appeals in everyone in the audience. He had the public’s best interest and security at heart when he made his speech and delivered it with incredible finesse.
The Battle of Normandy is one of the most notable battles of World War II. On D-Day, the first day of the battle, 156,000 Allied forces landed on and invaded the beaches of Normandy, France to assist in the liberation of Europe. On that grisly day, 946 Canadians, 2,700 British, and and 6,603 Americans were killed in combat against the Axis powers (D'Day Museum). Decades later, thousands of people commemorate those who heroically risked their lives on D-Day to fight for their liberty; the date June 6 will remain as a heartfelt reminder for all to express their appreciation for those heroes, lost and lived. Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States and a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran, expressed gratitude for the vets by having a memorial speaking in France (DefenseMedia).
The rocky shores of Dieppe, France, are littered with soldiers’ bodies, ruthlessly shot down by the Germans. The Nazis have been dominating European countries, which drove the Allies to take action- they raid Dieppe on August 19, 1942. The troops that volunteered to go on the perilous journey `consist of about 5000 Canadians, 1000 British Commandos, and 50 American Rangers, a mere 6050 men overall. They were led by Major-General J.H. Roberts, the military force commander, Captain J. Hughes-Hallett, the naval force commander, and Marshal T.L. Leigh-Mallory, the air force commander.
December 7th, 1941 is a day changed the lives of all Americans. It is the day Japan deliberately attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii killing many U.S. soldiers and destroying a lot of the U.S. naval fleet. This day which turned the tide of World War II, up until this point the U.S. had not chosen to intervene in the conflict overseas, but Japan’s attack had given the U.S. a reason to enter the fight. This speech given by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 8th, 1941 was his own passionate plea to the U.S. government and people to support the U.S. entering the war and fighting back against the tyranny occurring overseas. President Franklin D. Roosevelt effectively appeals to the emotions of the U.S. population by establishing trust with his audience through the use of emotional diction, and repetition which allow him to rally support for the war effort.
He uses people’s personal stories and moral choices as a lens to tell the story of World War II. From these stories, he draws common themes and traces their impact on the war, and the impact on society postwar. On page 13 he talks about using two different hats in which to use in our historical observance while reading his book. The first is, “the stance of celebration: the imperative one feels to recapture vividly the drama, sacrifice, and extraordinary achievement that culminated in allied victory.” This stance is how we tend to usually view the war.
“Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori” is the old lie of glory told to sacrifices of war. Erich Maria Remarque, author of the historical fiction All Quiet on the Western Front, tells the tale of Paul Baumer, a German soldier fighting on the western front in World War I. Baumer struggles to realize the purpose he is fighting for, and the justice behind it. Remarque demonstrates how the promised glory presented to soldiers is not worth the sufferings of war in All Quiet on the Western Front. Soldiers face countless horrors on and away from the battlefield. Corpse rats and rats that feasted on human flesh plagued the trenches and “attacked 2 large cats and a dog, bit them to death and devoured them” (Remarque 103).
“If you 're going through hell, keep going “- Winston Churchill “Un di Veit Hot Geshvign “(And the World Remained Silent) - Eliezer Wiesel. These last two quotes are inspiring yet the theme is different. Winston Churchill and Elie Wiesel, two exceptional individuals, who lived through the war and presented us with their point of view towards the war and how to cope with it. The best way to solve conflict is by speaking up, just like Wiesel. He kept a positive mentality and made certain everyone’s voice was heard too.
Bombs exploding and guns firing are a few of the extremely hard things that soldiers had to go through during the war. World War Two was a war that will forever be remembered. Many lives were lost and many legacies were left. Willis Wyatt was a soldier during World War Two, and he recalls many things from the war. While remembering World War Two, it is important to remember that receiving a purple heart is a very high honor, Victory in Europe Day marks a significant day in history, and The Battle of the Bulge was a notable turning point of the war.
Veteran’s Day On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of the year, 97 years ago, hostilities rested between Germany and the Allied Nations, marking the end of “the war to end all wars” (World War One), soon evolving as a day devoted to world peace, called “Armistice Day.” However, at the end of the Second World War, President Eisenhower reformed the day to “Veteran’s Day” – a 24-hour period to recognize and appreciate veterans who serve for our freedom and justice in every war.
“We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air.” This is a WW2 quote talking about the patriotism that was happening during WW2. When many people think about WW2, they think about all the horrific things that happened. Many people forget the good that people did, and what happened after the war ended. Many people that fought in WW2 share memories and stories of the good that they did for their country, all the opportunities that they got from the war, and the people that they encountered.

Roosevelt if you are into history you know what I'm talking about on December, 7 1941 A surprise military strike organized by the Imperial of Japanese Navy against the U.S. in a Sunday morning a big disaster that happen in U.S. territory Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Let me explain fast what happen couuple of hundreds japanese fighter planes atacked the U.S. naval base the Japanese managed to destroy almost twenty naval vessels in here we include battle ships and normal ships, almost up to two hundred american airplanes, more than 2000 American Soliders and sailors died plus another 1000 wounded not including the civilians the people this disasster lasted
After viewing the film and reading the transcript I was able to learn many things about heroism and the types of heroism. Joseph Campbell believes that there are two types of heroes. One is a physical hero which requires saving someone’s life or sacrificing himself/herself for someone else. Meanwhile, the other type of hero is a spiritual hero which learned a way of experiencing a super normal range of spiritual life and came back to tell it. However, I am confused with Campbell’s interpretation on the spiritual hero because people do not come back from the dead.
During WWII, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston Churchill, calls upon Britain to not give up hope during a time of defeat, to turn the tables on Germany, to take the fight to them and to win. The purpose of Churchill’s speech, “We Shall Fight on the Beaches”, is to revive the spirits of the citizens and soldiers who have relinquished their hope . He adopts an inspiring, patriotic tone in order to convey that the British cannot be easily conquered. Churchill opens his speech by establishing that no matter the circumstances, Britain will rise out of the ashes to protect its citizens and land. He appeals to the emotions of the beaten down audience by acting as their friend rather than an authoritative position.
