As discussed by Grant H. Blume, in Chapter 11: Academic Planning for High School Students: Careful Choices Cultivate Postsecondary Opportunity and Success, grades and the types of classes a student takes are an important indicator of how well prepared students are for college. With that in mind, Esmeralda’s 9th through 11th grade unweighted GPA is a 3.9. During the interview, she identified math as one of her academic strengths, and English was one of her weaknesses. She talked about her generation having a different approach for English. She stated “We were the class, the experimenting class, they tried everything new on us. It was difficult because we were trying to do one thing, and then we were told to do a different thing.” The reason for this was the fact that her high school experienced a change of curriculum. She expressed how for so long she had been set on tackling English one way, and with the change of curriculum it was a whole different approach, so that took some readjustments. She has taken both the SAT and ACT. She scored 1,100 on the New SAT, and a 23 on the ACT, but is schedule to retake them in the fall. Along with that, she also took two SAT Subject Tests, in the following areas, Spanish and Mathematics. She did a little below average, but hopes those exams strengthen her academic profile. Along with that she also took the AP Spanish exam and scored a 4. Some academic issues she has had to overcome, was the fact that her parents had minimal education; so she was never able to get help from them. As a result, she had to stay after school or ask around through out her day for help. Nonetheless, it was her perseverance and desire to get good grades that allowed her to find alternative ways to her schoolwork done.
