In this work, I am going to access two groups of people encountered in my daily life which are my family and my friends.
When I talking to my friends, I found that we usually use many co-mixed language, for example, “得 la” this word we use it to represent okay, the word “得” is a Chinese word and “la” is an English word, most of my friends use this word. The reason behind are not because we want to act cool by using English, but we think using the formal Chinese is weird, such as answering people with “沒問題” (means okay, fine or no problem), will let the person who are listening feel strange; Besides, using co-mixed language is becoming more common in the society, so it is needed to stay close to the trend by talking co-mixed language. In my point of view, I use co-mixed language often, because I think sometimes it is hard to explain things by using straight Chinese or English, and my brain turns blank when I am trying to recall a vocab, so I use the other language to replace. Co-mix is not only including English and Chinese but also other language. Let me make a typical example, in Japanese there is a word called “気持ちい” (Ki/ mo /chi/ ii) which means feeling comfortable, but both Chinese and English can’t express that exact feeling, sin this case using co-mix in the sentence is the best way to tell others your feeling. So co-mix is important to express our feelings.
Other than co-mixed language, acronym is another language feature we often use. For example, we usually said U.S. instead of United State of America; CPU instead Central Processing Unit; CNN in place Cable News Network. This entire example shows us acronym is very vital to shorten our speech, and it also can let people remember the company easier.
Last but not least, after writing portfolio, I found that I know more about our language use, and this is my first time to think about my language features and problems.
