Did you know that Macbeth was a real person? He was the king of Scotland from 1040-1057 and actually got there because he killed Duncan I in battle. While the Macbeth in Shakespeare’s classic story might have killed more than the real one, he still was a killer. Alyssa Bustamante killed when she was just a young girl. While Macbeth and Alyssa have killed people, they have many similarities and differences. They are alike in the way that they believe life has no value. Yet, they are different in the way that their victims were different and they both killed for different reasons. Macbeth and Alyssa Bustamante had a few similarities between the two of them. The most prominent one, however is that they both believed that life had little to no value. This shown in Macbeth when Macbeth finds out that Lady Macbeth died. He said that “she should have died hereafter”.(Shakespeare 5.5.17) By this Macbeth is saying that if she didn’t die on that day, she would have died eventually. Macbeth believed that her death really didn’t matter because death is inevitable; Alyssa believed that too. Macbeth killed for power, and to be king. However, Alyssa killed because she “wanted to know what it felt like” (Bustamante 3) She said that she always found the thought of it interesting and was actually crazy enough to try it for herself. The other difference between the two is the victims that they both went after. Macbeth killed Duncan and other people, whereas Alyssa killed a 9 year old girl named Elizabeth Olten. She killed Elizabeth most likely because she was an easy target and knew her because Alyssa’s younger sister was her friend.
