The short stories The Lottery and The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas places the reader in a dystopian society where there are some pretty wild rituals that are essentially existing due to complete fallacies, appeal to antiquity for The Lottery and appeal to ignorance in The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. These are quite dark and contain death and abuse; however they also contain a lot of symbolism. No, rather the person who “wins” is stoned to death with flat stones prepared by the children of the community. The one main detail that stands out is the black box. To start with, the box is black, a color that commonly symbolizes death, which is what essentially comes out of the box. The box itself is old, and falling apart, so much so that it is splintering. This likely shows a more hidden symbolization of the coming end of the tradition, something that is mentioned in the story when they talk about the ending of the lottery in nearby cities due to the younger population deciding against the ritual. Excluding the lottery itself, the black box is a huge focal point of the short story, being mentioned many times, showing it’s importance despite being such a small detail.
