During the 19th century, the aspects of women being the weaker sex have demonstrated the idea of gender inequality. Additionally, the oppression of women during the 19th century has been reflected through a variety of stories that have shown the struggle of women to obtain social equality by the dominant sex (male). Both Gilman’s, “The Yellow Wallpaper”, and Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” are based on the oppression of women, but there are many differences in the story including the psychological aspects of the dominant patriarchy, social aspects of the male idea, and the subordination of women being present.
Throughout centuries, “inequality” has shown a prevention towards the development of society. In this case, during the 19th-century patriarchy was present by the unequal power between men and women where women were oppressed, dominated, and were into the disadvantage by men. It has been characterized as the gender inequality by putting women in a place where they could not vote, instead, be a housewife, responsible for raising children, and follow the man’s rules restricting her freedom.Women were restricted in many ways that they could be described as “slaves” because they were “owned” by men.
