Every once in a while, I go with one of my friends to volunteer at our local Animal Control and the sight is heartbreaking. All of the animals there are in desperate need of a home and even though the shelter does not euthanize, I can't imagine all of those sweet faced furry friends being killed without even getting the chance to find a home. The shocking numbers speak for themselves. Every year in America alone, approximately 5.5 million animals are euthanized in our shelters. Shouldn't the name "shelter" speak for itself? They should be safe havens for our animals while they go through the sadness of not having a home, not a place where they are on borrowed time and have to get a home quickly or face the final curtain. For one thing, many families may be looking for a furry friend. Pets have been proven to lower blood pressure and provide companionship. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 38 percent of Americans don't have a pet. It is more than likely that many of these people would like to have a pet but can't afford to buy one from the store or don't know how much the animals could help them. If we euthanize these animals, there is less chance that the families in need of a pet would be able to get one. There are so many better options but we still choose death? When did that become acceptable? While animals are not human, their lives are just as important. As stated in my first paragraph, many families really want a pet but they can't get one for a variety of reasons. Shelters provide the solution to many of these problems, but if they don't have any animals, how are they going to provide pets to these families? Every animal deserves the right to have a good home and before that they should have the right to live peacefully in shelters while they await their forever home.
