When looking at career opportunities one may see things that they never knew before. Choosing a career is probably one of the hardest things we will have to face as adults. Although, we may switch careers throughout our lives it is important to find a steady career. One career that grasp my interest is becoming a NJ State Trooper. People who are interested in becoming a State Trooper need to follow certain guidelines. Therefore, this paper will provide details about becoming a NJ State Trooper.

Each individual interested in becoming a NJSP must pass a medical/physical examination. Each applicant must pass a physical qualification test in order to complete the program. As with most employment jobs a background check evaluates a person’s integrity, sound moral character, responsibility, reliability/dependability, and their ethical judgment. Now that we discussed what it would take to become a NJSP, let’s discuss the salary one can expect to receive. According to an article titled: “The Average Salary of a New Jersey State Trooper” (Schnotz,2011) the median annual salary for all officers in New Jersey State Police force was $100,688. An individual gets paid while attending the police academy as well. One can expect to receive approximately $1,557.56 each month. After the academy and the individual becomes a commission officer the salary begins at $58,748.29 annually. (including uniform allowance for the 1st year) Each year the salary is expected to increase, in the 2nd year the compensation would be about $65,662.39. The higher the rank the higher the pay the individual can anticipate. For a Trooper to receive a promotion he or she must either do one of the following: A) Written Promotional OR B) Oral Promotion. The written promotion is an exam that is off a study list that will be distributed 6 weeks prior to the exam.
