Did you know that The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was set in place in 1982? The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is set in place to help protect the individual rights of Canadians. Within the Charter, Canadian citizens have many rights and freedoms, for example, the right to express their opinion, vote, move freely around Canada and to be free from discrimination. If the government enacts legislation to refute these rights and freedoms, as Canadians, we are able to take the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada to fight for our rights.

For many years, people of colour were forced into slavery just because of their race. They were made to be housekeepers, cooks, work on farms and build railways. Women were not allowed to vote, work or go to school. They had to stay home and cook, clean and take care of the babies. Little girls could not attend school and had to stay home and help their mothers. There are still many places around the world where women can’t work or go to school and lots of places where racism still happens. There are also many places where people have no rights because they have a dictator instead of a democracy. A dictator controls everyone and does not allow people to vote for their leader and usually gives the position to someone in their family when they die. It is usually in countries with dictators where women don’t have equal rights and cannot work or go to school.
