Russia are known as the world’s largest nation, borders European and Asian countries as well as the Pacific and Arctic ocean. In Russia, the population of Muslim living in the northern part of Caucasus quite higher in number. This make Islam as the second largest religion in Russia. However, those who were born before 1990 which in the communist time, they were brought by communist ideology. Ilnaz Akhmetov are one who was born in communist time, in 1988. He said that during those time, there was no official religion, people at his place, Tatarstan, used to practice Islam but not as a religion, but as a culture. So that time many countries which used to be under Russian they manage to get separation. There are many Muslim and Non-Muslim countries which are not used to be under Russian before, like Chechnya and others were fought and tried to get independent from Russia. Because they are not used to be part of Russian before. For Chechnya, they did more on military process like fighting and rebel. Fighting stop around quite long time ago. It’s hard to say that was a war, it’s used to be maybe two years of war and around four years of fighting. It is only involved some people who fought and rebel, not like the whole country but a group of people who tried to get independence. In 2002 or 2003, that time when the President change, the war already stops and it became quiet and peaceful. So they start to re-build the buildings, the places, and they start school and everything.
In your opinion, what are the current perception of Non-Muslim in Russia toward Muslim?
It depends on the places where the Muslim and the Non-Muslim are live. Those who are used to deal with each other and know Muslim well, people will treat Muslim like their own brother and sister, so they are quite good and close to each other. But the places where the Muslim community are minority, like Moscow, in 15 years ago, people have negative perception towards Muslim especially after Chechnya war. But we are not allowed to spread our religion, belief and view to other people. So we are free to practice ourselves but not free to simply go around and spread the religion. When you do that, you usually be taken by the police if they find out and they will take you and they will question you why are you doing that. When it’s come to rights, none of the religions have special rights but equal rights. For instance, as a Muslim we were given holiday like AidilAdha and AidilFitri. However, none of the universities or working places, provide any room for Salah or special facilities to practice religion. In Russia, religion is your private matter. When it comes to work, you have to separate from your religion. They use that kind of approach. So if you are Muslim, Christian or Atheist, it is your matter. Don’t bring it to your work places and to other people. In Moscow, even though you work in a company whose half are Muslim company, it still difficult for Muslim in Russia especially are minority to practice Islam. They did have a room prayer but they did not give special time to pray. When it comes to fasting, if you have a celebration or function at your office, it will be quite difficult for you. However, compared to my place, Tatarstan, which majority are Muslim, it quite easier to practice Islam. Even though some people don’t practice Islam, but they accept you as a Muslim, so when you want to
