The Cold War Presidents’ “In 1961 the world relations of this country have become tangled and complex. One of our former allies has become our adversary, and he has his own adversaries who are not our allies.” - John F. Kennedy on Nov. 16th 1961. Both President Truman and Eisenhower encouraged a more aggressive way of handling the spread of communism during the Cold War, while Kennedy dealt with the soviets in a more peaceful approach trying to avoid conflict. The Cold War was a long period of time after World War II when the United States and the Soviet Union were enemies (Ayers 817). This occurred at this time because nations were weak and the Soviet Union was trying to take over the governments of other countries and turn them communist. One way President Truman handled the spread of communism was by using economic aid. He sent money from the U.S. to the Greek Government in order to keep their economy strong enough to stay independent (Truman). Greece’s economy was so corrupt at the time, that their government would have been taken over by communism without our support. Another way Truman dealt with communism was by using military aid. He did this by sending military supplies to Greece, since the Greek army was small and weak (Truman). This would help Greece fight to keep their independence, and not allow communism to spread to their country. Truman also provided military use to countries being threatened by communist control. Under Truman, the United States, with the help of our allies within the United Nations, would fight to help any country with totalitarian regimes forced on them (Truman). This meant the United Nations together, would go to war with the Soviet Union to stop them from turning other nations into communist
