The relationship between confidence and its effect on sporting performance:
Confidence is an aspect that is crucial in sport and in all aspects of life. Confidence is now commonly talked about as a crucial part of sporting performance and how this affects sporting performance. Confidence is a part of the 4c’s regarding the topic of mental toughness. Research has been taken it is have been proven that having success has shown to affect the level of confidence and how that confidence can affect success (Covassin & Pero, 2004; Hays, Maynard, Thomas, & Bawden, 2007; Hays, Thomas, Maynard, & Bawden, 2009).The sporting world has recognised that sports psychology has become such a huge part of sports performance and how confidence has a part of success in sport (Vealey & Chase, 2008). Sports performers are continually evaluated and judged on their ability and how they perform under game situation.

This brings about confidence to the non elite athletes watching on as they see these athletes as “role models”. Elite athletes come under the same struggles as a non elite athlete would do. Athletes would experience different obstacles throughout sport, such as choking in a high pressured game and this would lower the self confidence level of the athlete just the same as a club level player would on a Saturday morning game. Unfortunatly once self confidence is lowered performance dips and the psychological mind of a performer expects to fail when taking part in sport (Hill, Hanton, Matthews, & Fleming, 2009). All who participate in sport experiences failure. Failure can help an individual or team to help athletes re evaluate performance and help them to improve and also focus on preparation, but if athletes don’t have the necessary skills to overcome setback and bounce back to regain full self confidence performance will drop (Gailli and Vealey,
