Central America has one of the highest crime rates in the world. In this paper we are going to take a look at the problems they have, along with some solutions to fix it. We are going to discuss why there is so much crime and the possibly steps that need to be put in place to lower the crime rate, while simultaneously lowering the poverty rate. The focus country for this paper is Central America, and focus topic to be more specific, the crime in Central America. Central America has 4 countries in the top 5 for murders per 100,000 people just to begin with, so there is a lot of crime in Central America, especially Honduras that as of 2012 leads the world in murders with 90.4 murders per 100,000. Central America has .6 percent of the world’s population but accounts for 4 percent of worldwide murders. What’s the cause of so much murder and crime in such a small area? It’s a mix of drugs, gangs, poverty, and unorganized and corrupt governments. Also, only 24 percent of the murders in Central America warrant a conviction, so 76 percent of the time, the murderer is not convicted.
