Honduras has the highest homicide rate in the world. (worldatlas.com) It’s a country that has been affected by imperialism multiple times throughout its history. In the early parts of the country's history, Honduras was imperialised by Spain and went through a couple of different political powers before becoming independent. During more recent times the U.S. used military force to gain control of the country in hopes to help the political uproar and failing country using imperialistic tendencies. In 1824 these countries became the Federal Republic of Central America, also call the United Provinces of Central America (timelines.ws) and were ruled by president Salvadoran General Manuel José Arce. Later, a civil war took place in the Federal Republic of Central America over opposing political beliefs. President Arce was a conservative and valued Spain’s traditional values while the liberal party valued Western Hemisphere values. Francisco Morazán, the leader of the liberal party, would eventually come to overthrow Arce and the conservatives in 1829. (nationsonline.com) Morazán then became president in 1830 and lead the United Province of Central America until José Cecilio del Valle came to power. José Cecilio del Valle was a conservative with liberal ideas of economic. He never came to power as Valle died before he could. Morazán was re-elected but was left with no one to lead when the conservatives of the Federal Republic of Central America undermined him. As a result Nicaragua, Honduras and Costa Rica separated from the United Provinces of Central America in 1838. Imperialism slowed their progress of this as Honduras wasn't officially its own country until 1838 constantly fighting for what they want. At this time in major countries such as the United States, the first dots and dashes were used to name a letter in morse code. (electronics-notes.com) Honduras was still trying to figure out how to run itself. It didn’t truly begin to develop until 1886 when Marco Aurelio Soto became the president, pushing for the development of the country. Consequently, the Atlantic coast began to develop as ports popped up for the booming banana trade. Foreign companies stepped in and took over local ones. The foreign countries taking over the smaller one is economic imperialism and helped the country to grow and develop. These foreign companies then helped to modernize the country by building railroads and modern building essentially creating new towns and cities. The country continued to develop until 1932 when it was stalled due to another civil war due to political uproars involving the conservative and liberal ideas from the previous Federal Republic of Central America. Then to solve this problem and to protect the banana trade the U.S. stepped in and sent the first marines down to Honduras attempting to protect U.S. interests like the railroads and banana trade.
