The United States is no longer a Democracy

When one hears the word democracy, they usually think of the United states. A democracy is “ a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.”(Dictionary.com) The problem is, the United states isn't a democracy anymore. The U.S. is no longer a democracy because of voting issues, human right violations and because it is now an oligarchy. The United States is no longer a democracy, it is an oligarchy. An oligarchy is “a form of government in which all power is vested in a few persons or in a dominant class or clique.”(Dictionary.com) Instead of this country being by the people it is actually being represented by only a few. In an interview on former president Jimmy Carter, he states, ““The clear finding is that the U.S. is an oligarchy, no democratic country, at all.” If this country was a democracy, average citizens would be able to say their opinion and have it at least be considered. Most things that citizens say are disregarded by higher authority. The only people who have a say are the oligarchs. …show more content…

A quote from the Jimmy Carter article states, “'freedom of the press' was really just freedom of aristocrats to control the 'news' -- to frame public issues in the ways the owners want.” Stories on the news may not even be completely telling the truth. The high ranking people in government have so much power and they can virtually make anything happen. The right to freedom of speech is partially being violated as well. Average citizens who voice their opinions aren't being heard. If something they say goes against the government, then it won’t be made into a huge deal because of the power of the
