Today, the United States of America uses a variation on this system called known as a “representative democracy.” In a true democracy, the citizens have a say in every decision made by the government. Because the daily governance of the country is so complex, every citizen cannot have a say in each decision. Therefore representatives must be chosen to work for the common good. Unfortunately, many elected officials can obtain too much power or authority over time making their representation of the citizens less representative. So yes, congressional members should have term limits because it can minimize the amount of power that an individual can obtain over a period of time. Which this act will ensure stability and prevent any issues. Also, longerserving representatives would be prevented from accumulating a disproportionate amount of power through seniority. Also regarding to congress, with term limits in place, Congress will be more responsible toward their constituents because they will soon be constituents themselves. They will have to live under the laws they have created while in office. Last major point of many, is that money is a major factor in who will win an election. Incumbents have the benefit of the profits they made while in power, plus the backing of their party, contributing organizations and special interests, to get reelected. However, these wealthy incumbents are often not the best person for the job, as they are so far removed from the daily realities of the American people. A middle class person who better understands the problems facing the average citizen is highly unlikely to get elected over a wealthy incumbent. Term limits will help to eliminate the shady, profitable relationships between members of Congress
