What is Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD)?
Dissociative Identity Disorder once called Multiple Personality Disorder is a serious form of separation, a mental process which produces a lack of connection in a person’s thoughts, feelings, actions, memories and sense of identity. DID is when two or more clearly different personalities are present and take over an individual.
What causes Dissociative Identity Disorder?
Why people get DID isn’t fully determined, but most cases report having involvement with severe physical or sexual abuse, mostly during childhood. Therapist will usually try to help their patients build relationships with others and to help them understand feelings they might have not experienced before and to be more comfortable expressing their past and emotions. This can be done in individual, family and/or group psychotherapy. These all have to be done at a very slow or delicate pace so the patient with DID doesn’t get to overwhelmed. DID patients also commonly have other mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, anger and impulse control problems. These are generally treated with medication. Long-term treatment is successful if the person stays committed.
What is the prognosis for DID? How can one live with the disorder? People with Dissociative Identity Disorder have the best chance for living a good life if they get treatment for their multiple symptoms, as well as staying committed. Individuals who have DID have more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs to help cope with their past experiences. Also, people with DID are at risk for attempting suicide more than once. The individual will most likely always have to keep taking medications and getting treatments, but it is possible to live a happy life.
