Mental illnesses affect the majority of the population, and they are more common than one would think. However, there are rare illnesses that some people have to live with, and they may or may not have a cure for them. An illness that is unde-rappreciated is called dissociative identity disorder (DID). What is (DID)? According to "Is It Trauma- or Fantasy-Based? Comparing Dissociative Identity Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Simulators, and Controls" (DID) is "a severe trauma-related disorder, typically with comorbid PTSD (8), and is related to early childhood traumatization, including factors such as disorganized attachment, chronic neglect, and abuse." (Vissia 112). Personality disorders are mostly associated with a trauma response from childhood and start to develop in order to avoid those traumatic memories. Living as one entity is hard enough for others as it is so, living with multiple entities must be a challenge that is undervalued by society. Since people cope with trauma differently, there is no way to predict who might develop (DID) and there is no medicine that reverts this illness. (DID) is psychological; the only way for someone to “reverse” the multiplicity, would be one’s self. To find a balance with their personalities, therapy comes in hand. The aftermath of the traumatic events during childhood changes the way these people will live and the challenges they have to overcome. The treatment for one’s self-esteem with therapy paths the way to a happier life with their own body and minds. This is also significant due to the fact that with multiple minds in one body, one would develop identity issues and ask themselves who they
