Is it the responsibility of the US to be the world's policeman? President Donald J. Trump has an opinion. During the January State of the Union address, Trump said, “I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to help ensure American foreign-assistance dollars always serve American interests, and only go to America's friends.” He shares some desire to use foreign aid for America’s benefit, but he does not have the same motivation to help foreign countries to rebuild and develop as President Truman did in the Truman Doctrine. President Trump is motivated to provide financial aid so that other countries can help America to achieve greater power, whereas President Truman’s motivation was to combat communism by providing financial aid to Europe to help them rebuild and grow stronger. American foreign aid is what trump uses as a weapon. Trump is currently arguing with Pakistan over Twitter, threatening to supply Palestine with more aid unless they support his decision to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (Max Greenwood, “Trump Steps up Threats to Foreign Aid.”) In the past America has acted as an international police force using their power and influence for good, providing foreign aid, protection, and other kinds of help to countries in need. Donald Trump is straying away from the ideals set forth during the Truman Administration. America still acts as an international policeman, however it has become corrupt. Foreign aid is cut off from nations who don't express similar opinions and it is instead provided to their enemies. America should continue to act as an international police force. However, if America is to be seen as a corrupt police force by using their power as a weapon, they may begin to lose allies.
