Truman Primary Source The topic of this passage is that President Truman is addressing issues of nations persuaded to change their way of life. He explains two ways of life, one being based on the majority, and one being based on the minority forcibly imposed upon the majority. He says, “I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. There is evidence that Truman is worried about the rest of the world when he says, “Should we fail to aid Greece and Turkey in this fateful hour, the effect will be far reaching to the West as well as to the East.” We can also see exactly what he is asking Congress for. The passage states, “I therefore ask the Congress to provide authority for assistance to Greece and Turkey in the amount of $400,000,000,” and, “in addition to funds, I asked the Congress to authorize the detail of American civilian and military personnel to Greece and Turkey, at the request of those countries, to assist in the tasks of reconstruction, and for the purpose of supervising the use of such financial and material assistance as may be furnished. I recommend that authority also be provided for the instruction and training of selected Greek and Turkish personnel. Finally, I ask that the Congress provide authority which will permit the speediest and most effective use, in terms of needed commodities, supplies, and equipment, of such funds as may be authorized. Following the war, women and African Americans were allowed to work and wages began increasing. In our passage, it states that the United States contributed $341,000,000,000 to win World War 2. This time was also the start of the Cold War, said to be an ideological and political rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was aiming to spread communism across Europe, which the United States was against. This led to containment and was laid out in the Truman Doctrine promising US support to countries threatened by the USSR.
