What is meant by dual relationships?

A dual relationship is when someone has more than one relationship with another person, such as when a teacher is also the student’s counselor. Another example would be when the wife of a company’s CEO is his secretary, or a basketball coach is also the student’s boy scout leader. Some dual relationships are not very likely to cause a conflict of interest or obscure objectivity on behalf of the authority figure, such as a coach who is also a boy scout leader. On the other hand, a teacher who is also a student’s counselor can get very complicated in terms of objectivity.

However, as mentioned earlier, there are ethical boundaries and limits to being a mentee.

Some ethical don’ts

Don’t lend money to the teen.
Likewise, don’t barrow any money from the teen.

What would be an unusual circumstance….. I can’t even think of one. Well…… maybe something like… it is the wee hours of the morning and all department stores are closed. Your teen rips his pants to the point where they are falling off. You, by coincidence have a pair that is the exact size in your office. But then…. what would cause you to be out at the wee hours of the morning with your teen…. under the most unusual circumstances ????

It is recommended that you include your teen in family events with MUCH CAUTION, for example if the family is having a large picnic gathering at the beach.
