Every director uses certain stylistic techniques that distinguishes them from their rivals in the film industry. They use these traits to make their films appealing to certain audiences. Tim Burton incorporates mediocre life throughout his films, the misinterpreted character archetype, as well as the theme of dying or distressed dogs. All of these traits placed together harmonize to give a terrifying and dark mood while still incorporating a child like mentality.
Tim Burton uses his own sense of style to create setting elements that give the audience an eerie and out of place feeling. Burton incorporates somber and melancholy undertones to captivate the audience. Specifically in the film Edward Scissorhands. As a result of being abandoned at a young age, Edward thrived up on mountain top for years where he lived alone. One day Peg; a protagonist in this film, traveled up to his uninhabited oasis to bring him down to her suburban community. Quickly Edward was set apart from the rest of the suburban neighborhood due to his out of the ordinary hair as well as his hands made of scissors. In addition to his messed up hair and hands, the neighbors give unpleasant stares into Edward's soul making the mood melancholy and sad. This demonstrates how Burton incorporates the misunderstood character lurking around. We also see the incorporation of a misfit character in the motion picture Alice in Wonderland. Alice; a young girl stuck in a “dream” can’t figure out how escape an unpredictable delusion. When Alice falls into a tree stump she quickly realizes she is not like the rest. In the wonderland where she stumbles around she is surrounded by talking rabbits, stoned caterpillars and one vicious bandersnatch. Every character in Wonderland is convinced “She is the wrong Alice.” This leaves the audience captivated and has sympathy for
