Tim Burton, an American film director, and producer. Over the years he has made quite a few recognizable films. Such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a whimsical film following young Charlie Bucket and his Grandpa Joe as they tour Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory with four other lucky contestant winners. Edward Scissorhands is a unique film that follows human-like scientific creation Edward, as he tries to adapt to the new world around him. Across films, Tim Burton uses color, low key lighting, and motifs to illustrate his original style.

Common motifs Burton uses are spirals and stripes in the costumes, movie titles and setting design. Another motif Burton uses is casting the same actors and actresses in multiple films. A lot of Burton’s films casts Johnny Depp as the awkward outcast protagonist, and Helena Bonham Carter as a supporting actress or an antagonist. By using motifs, a director is able to illustrate their style into all of their work, and makes it easily recognizable as their own.
Using these techniques and devices, Burton is able to portray his creative and original style. Burton’s style is easily recognizable and tells a story or theme, which in many films can be similar. Some examples of his theme’s include misunderstood outcasts (Edward Scissorhands), and the importance of family (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Although quite a few of his works feature similar themes, Burton’s films can also appeal to a wide audience because of the variety of character personalities. Some of which can be easily relatable. Regardless of what cinematic devices a director uses, they can each showcase someone’s personal style. It is up to the director to decide how the techniques are used illustrate their own
