Even though viruses cause gastrointestinal infection but bacteria also cause such infections by infecting the lining of the intestine or the stomach. stomach is infectad by large number of pathogenic microorganism and this infection is usually extends to the nearest structures which are the esophagus proximally and duodenum distally.
Stomach infections is caused by two gerneral situations which are gastritis and gastroenteritis.

An ulcer is caused due to damage the lining of the gut and exposed the underlying tissue. If we could see inside our gut, an ulcer seems like a small, red crater on the inside lining of the gut. stomach ulcer:

Generally there is always a balance between the acid amount that we make and the mucus protect barrier. Due to the alteration in this balance an ulcer may develop, allowing the acid to damage the lining of the duodenum or stomach .
