The great thing about being on rock bottom is that there is only one way to go - up. In Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, a young girl Kira goes through strategic battles as her unique talent is recognized and as she is placed with a very special responsibility as her conflicts surround her. The characters play a role as they rank in different ranges of Maslow’s Hierarchy; a chart which places human mortality with what they find themselves and are accepted as. Gathering Blue includes dynamic and static characters as they develop new characteristics and unfold who they are. Kira, the main character, is a dynamic character in Gathering Blue. Matt, Kira’s lovable and loyal young friend, is a static character in Kira’s story. Unlike Vandara, Matt is spontaneous and is placed on the self-evaluation level of Maslow’s Hierarchy. Matt and Kira have been friends for a long time and Matt have proven to Kira he would do anything in her favor. In Gathering Blue, Matt proves he is worthy of making such a big difference. As Matt takes matters into his own hands, his actions are responsible for the base of Kira’s own knowledge of her father, and the truth of the village. Matt brought back Kira’s father (whom was told by Kira by her own guardian), which lead Kira to uncovering the truth of her dystopian society. Throughout Gathering Blue, Matt continues to work for the benefits of others with a positive effect, placing him on the highest level of Maslow’s Hierarchy. Kira’s story is filled with many characters who contribute to her own village’s mysteries and her friendships. These dynamic and static characters experience their charecter conflicts as their self evaluation and actions in vary on Maslow’s Hierarchy.
