Gun violence is an occurring problem in the United States; this does not mean that guns should be taken away in general. “Gun control is ineffective in reducing crime rates” because criminals do not follow laws (Moorhouse). Gun control generally refers to laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. They vary greatly around the world. The second amendment states; “the United States Constitution protects the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Congress of the). This means the government cannot legally take away the U.S. citizens guns. The second amendment originated in the revolutionary war. Many people suggest and even protest for the ban of all firearms in the United States. In hope to reduce crime in crime ridden cities, many strict gun laws were put in place in places such as Chicago, Detroit, and even New York City. The crime rates in these cities have not changed. About 140,000 crimes happen per year in Chicago in which “1,546 are gun related” (Chicago Shooting Victims). In Denver, where guns are legal, less than 30 people per year die.
Many professionals such as police officers and other law enforcers believe “that casualties related to guns would be decreased if armed citizens were present at the onset of an active-shooter incident” (Minter). Many of the citizens that were robbed scared off criminals by firing a warning shot, which in the end could have saved their life and many other people’s lives around them. All of the recent mass shootings could have been prevented if an armed citizen stood up and either confronted the gunman or took matters into their own hands and fired back on the gunman.
