What does hair mean to you? Hair is a poem by Elizabeth Acevedo a Dominican-American poet and author that talks about afro Dominican hair and how People view it. in “Hair” by Elizabeth Acevedo, she uses repetition and 1st person narration to argue that because of her appearance, she faces oppression and she doesn't let that change her. Elizabeth Acevedo used hair to represent the oppression she faced in the text. In the text, Elizabeth said, “My mother tells me to fix my hair. And by “fix,” she means straighten. She means whiten.” Elizabeth also said “What they mean is, “Why would you date a black man?” What they mean is, “a prieto cocolo” What they mean is, “Why would two oppressed people come together? In my opinion, I agree with Elizabeth Acevedo because I can relate to Elizabeth Acevedo. She argues that because of her appearance, she faces oppression and that is true because she is told to change herself to fit in. She is judged for her appearance and that causes her oppression but she chooses not to change because that is who she is. A counterclaim may be that why would she make life harder for herself if she can just act a certain way and Change her appearance to fit in. If she does, she would not have to face All this hardship she's putting herself through when she can just change herself.
