Understanding and knowledge of the human body has seen an unprecedented surge in the past century; conversely, the intricate workings of the brain remain an enigma to researchers. Over the past few years, I have witnessed my grandfather’s slow cognitive and physical deterioration as a consequence of age-related dementia. I have spent countless hours accompanying him on physician visits and appointments. These experiences have emphasized to me the importance of geriatric care, supporting patient’s families, and have contributed to the maturity of my character today. These qualities, coupled with my scientific background and personal investment in volunteer health care, make me an asset to the medical profession. Academics have always played an influential role in my life; however, I have diverse interests through involvement in athletics, my community, and volunteer initiatives. When volunteering at Vancouver General Hospital, I had routine interactions with patients as a member of the rehabilitation and recreation department. I learned that a patient’s quality of life is influenced by more than just physiological health; social, environmental and psychological factors play a vital role. Building a rapport and understanding each patient’s unique narrative was shown to be as important as diagnosing illnesses. Beginning in 2009, I sought the opportunity to volunteer with the ABLE Charitable Hospital, in Faridabad, India. This organization assists impoverished orphans and widows by offering medical services and education. During my time there, I interacted with pre- and post-operative patients to ensure they were comfortable. Back in Canada, I spoke at charity fundraisers to raise both awareness and funds for this hospital. The experience has allowed me a unique perspective to observe health outcomes globally and to understand how cultural and socioeconomic differences affect the health of a community.
