Traveling through space, embarking on a journey that will change the course of history, just scratches the surface of topics that are involved in science fiction. Interstellar is a good representation of this storyline. With that being said, certain journey arc’s or hero’s arc’s are very common in these kinds of stories and outlines like “Maureen Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey Arc,” or “Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth,” help allow people to understand the story more. Mythology also ties in as it can be used to portray gods while also involving the science fiction element. Space travel has been a very common theme for science fiction for a long time. Cooper and Murph from Interstellar both have journey arc’s that lead them down specific pathways that make them into the person they are at the end of the movie. Going back to the outlines, both of them can be found in the most popular science fiction movies today such as Star Wars and The Matrix. However, there is a difference in them and what they represent. Heroine’s Journey has a far less complicated structure as it is more simple in describing a journey arc. It uses femininity and masculinity to better describe the journey. However, when looking at Joseph Cambell’s ‘Monomyth’ it provides a far more complicated and detailed journey arc as it has seventeen stages which are more in-depth and detailed. When looking at both, the Heroine’s Journey is more about the person figuring out who they are and is not as much related to science fiction. Although, there are elements that sometimes portray it as science fiction. A good example of this would be any of the avengers movies. These movies involve heavy elements of science fiction and fantasy such as time travel, technological advancements, and superheroes. Additionally, there are characters in the movies; Thor and Loki that represent the topic of mythology in science fiction. Thor is considered the god of thunder while Loki is the god of trickery. They are also from a place called Asgard which can be seen as a reference to Mount Olympus which is involved in Greek mythology.
