In the article, Morgan defines witchcraft as “an ancient and in some societies a relatively respectable profession. ”(Morgan, 47) The meaning of it seems as if witchcraft is not a threat to everybody and that there was more to being a witch. There were two different witchcraft that the witches did. One of them was benign witchcraft while the other one was malign witchcraft.
How was the idea of a witch created or thought of? It started when two girls asked an Indian woman their fortune. Their reverend father noticed odd behavior, and as the result of a testimony, the first three woman were sent to jail. After that there were more accusations of people being witches. But what made people believe or know that another was a witch?

The story of the Salem Trial witches began in the year 1692 after several young girls were accused for being witches in Salem village, Massachusetts. After the accusations some witches were hanged on June 1692. But the people that were accused of witchcraft were not only women, some of them were men too.
There was much superstition and ignorance in the 17th century England and hundreds of women were wrongly accused and punished. From 1484 until around 1750 some 200,000 witches were tortured, burnt or hanged in Western Europe and England. Most supposed witches were usually poor old women. Women who weren’t lucky enough to look beautiful. Any woman who was ‘crone-like’ with broken irregular teeth , sunken cheeks and a hairy lip was assumed to be a witch !

There is no fear.
What is the definition of witch-trials? The witch trials were a series of persecutions and prosecutions that occurred between the 15th and 17th century in Europe. Thousands of individuals (women) were accused of witchcraft during this time and were subjected to trials, torture, and death. From substantial evidence, the trials frequently featured charges based on hearsay, gossip, and supposition. Several of the accused were subjected to brutal questioning and torture to elicit confessions, and others were killed solely based on their confessions.
Why were people so held on this idea of them being witches? During the 17th century, the supernatural was considered part of everyday life the concept of their being magic formed from the 15th-century era when farmers who used charms for farming and agriculture a “white magic” brought this idea that there is “dark magic” to this brought the common belief of witches. This also seems to be the case during the Mccarthy era just as townsmen and women were scared of witches during the Salem witch era, civilians in the mcCarthy era were scared of the idea of there being some communist in which who were trying to tear that right to government and equality. The Red scare being the second most mass hysteria situation it begun during the 1950’s when Senator McCarthy started this idea that there was secret communist among the community. Mccarthy thus began his own Witch hunt looking and scouting for the individuals who appeared as communism to him.
The people believed that the word of God was the only way of life and needed to be followed. They believed that the witches were trying to “breakdown God.” Any person who was accused of being a witch was first checked to see if they had the devils mark and if they did they would poke it with a needle and if they showed pain or drew blood then it wasn’t considered the devil’s mark. They were put on trial but no one ever wanted to stand up for the witches because if you did then you would then get interrogated and people then thought you were a witch also. Many people believe that things are good how they are but they don’t realize how much more needs to still be done.
In Paganism, you do not have to practice witchcraft. In Wicca, witchcraft is usually practiced. A person who considers themselves a Pagan, usually is Polytheistic. Polytheistic means one believes in more than one deity, whether that is a god or goddess.
