Approach to Holistic Healing
What is Holistic Healing? This seems to be the new wave of the future in the United States. Many other countries have been practicing this form of healing for hundreds or thousands of years. “Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that address the whole person-body, mind and spirit”. (Placeholder1) Many in the field refer to this as Complementary, Alternative or Integrative Medicine. This filed is so diverse and there are many that we all know already, such as acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, reiki, homeopathy and reflexology and even dietary supplements, just to name a few. Many of these treatments are used to treat diseases and conditions such as asthma, emotional problems, muscle treatments, viral infection and even cancer. The National Institutes of Health(NIH) breaks these treatments into five various categories. This makes it much easier to understand. Alternative whole medicine which is homeopathic, naturopathic, Chinese and Ayurvedic medicines. Mind-body interventions which is meditation, prayer, mental healing, music and dance therapy. Biologically based therapies, such as herbs, teas, food, vitamins and dietary supplements. Manipulative and body-based methods such as chiropractic and osteopathic manipulations and massage. …show more content…

Complementary medicine is uses in combination with more traditional medicines. For example, say you are a cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy and you use acupuncture to help with the side effects of the treatment. Alternative medicine is used by itself. For example, you are a cancer patient who forgoes chemotherapy and you choose to treat your cancer with dietary changes. Lastly Integrative medicine which draws from both above and combines it with traditional medicines. So, in theory it “make use of all appropriate therapies”.
