The first time we see the importance of looks in the book is when Elizabeth is adopted by the Frankensteins. First Elizabeth is described as beautiful, loyal, trusting, sympathetic, and caring toward others. Victor feels that she is more family to them than he is. In the text it states “Everyone loved Elizabeth. The passionate and almost reverential attachment with which all regarded her became, while I shared it, my pride and my delight.”(Shelly pg.21). When Elizabeth gets adopted into Caroline Frankenstien’s family at five years old she is immediately described in positive words.“Everyone loved Elizabeth”, and “I have a pretty present for my Victor” (Shelly, 21). This quote shows how important looks are to an individual and how attractive people get treated better. Because they are more pleasant to look at, they receive more attention than others. We can see this when Victor says “No mortal could support the horror of that countenance. A mummy again endued with animation could not be so hideous as that wretch” (Shelley, 43). “Mingled with this horror, I felt the bitterness of disappointment… Immediately, Victor is disappointed because his appearance is not pleasant to him. In fact, he might have been embarrassed to have the creature in public. Later in the book, Victor refers to him as a “monster”. “Cursed be the fiend” (Shelly, 175) By using these words Victor focuses on his disappointment in the creature’s appearance.
