“Invitational rhetoric is an invitation to understanding as a means to create a relationship rooted in equality, immanent value , and self-discrimination” ( pg.38) Before understanding more about invitational rhetoric, we have to first understand what rhetoric means. Rhetoric is not a simple word to define, it’s viewed many ways. Breaking it down rhetoric can be persuading someone or even giving a different view on a certain performance such as telling your friend to choose the right classes for colleges. Invitational rhetoric is non-traditional where it will be explained, how it’s used, and how invitational rhetoric is being used in action. Traditional rhetoric is not the same as Invitational rhetoric. As they’re different factors that invitational rhetoric does that traditional rhetoric wouldn’t. When invitational rhetoric is present, the rhetor giving the speech is inviting the audience to join with the rhetor. This example was great and really shows you invitational rhetoric in action compared to traditional rhetoric. It involves a women named Gearhart that saw a man at the airport. This man was rambling about girls and abortion, and made traditional rhetoric present by screaming at him. Time going by, they meet again but this time on the bus. There was only one seat left and it was next to the man. Instead of her normal rhetoric, she chose a different route called invitational rhetoric. She approached him in a nice way and started to ask about him. After all this guy wasn’t a bad guy, he experienced with animals and was a chemist. This made Gearhart stop and listen to the man, giving her perspectives too. The story continues with them meeting in the parking lot a third time, being confused on what had happened today, they hug with their life’s
