Bad road conditions in Kentucky are a persistent issue that affects the safety and wellbeing of all travelers and Kentuckians alike. From potholes and uneven pavement to inadequate signage and poor lighting, Kentucky's roads are in desperate need of repair and refurbishment. However, this statewide issue is not new. Over the years, heavy traffic, weather, and the old age of the roads themselves has contributed to the worsening of the road conditions. Moreover, Kentucky experiences all four seasons and the extreme weather conditions exacerbate the condition of the roads, because of temperature fluctuations causing the ground to expand and contract which results in cracks, potholes, and uneven surfaces. The road conditions can only improve if the state increases funding for road maintenance, takes more preventative measures against declining roads once repaired, and Kentuckians take an active role in reporting all road issues.
As it stands, there simply is not enough funding within the Kentucky Transportation Department to keep up with all the road repairs that need to be completed. This has led to the rapid decline of many roads and highways throughout the state, “...there’s simply not enough transportation funding to keep these rural roads and the transportation system in general in good condition and operating safely and efficiently” (Heichelbech 1). It will require a lot of time, attention, and money to fix Kentucky roads. But once the roads are improved, it will save a lot of time, attention, and money. It is important to understand that while roads will improve, they may never be perfect. Kentucky will always brave all four seasons, vehicle accidents, and weather that can cause damage to the roads, but Kentucky can still have beautiful roads that can bounce back from anything with the support of its stakeholders. We must continue to fight for quality roads and repairs because addressing this issue will not only enhance the safety and wellbeing of everyday people, but it will also improve the state's economy, and attract investors and travelers alike, thereby making Kentucky a better place for people to work, live and visit.
