Evaluate the effectiveness of the law reform process in leading to a more just society.
The process of law reform is to decide whether laws work well and is fair to everyone. If not, they will hold and inquiry to look at how they can make it fair and just. To do this they shall conduct research and talk to stakeholders which could be anyone from judges to people who are affected such as yourselves, once they have found everything they can, they shall write a report to conclude on whether they should change the law or not. I have conducted research on bail laws and majority jury verdict laws to see whether the law reform process is effective and is leading to a more just society.

Bail is the temporary release of a person accused of crime while they await their trial, and those who are not granted bail are held on remand. The bail act of 1976 stated that everyone has the right to bail, unless there were strong reasons preventing it, and that the police and courts had to show reasons why a person could not be granted bail. it was amended on 85 occasions. This made it complicated, and difficult to respect. One of the main problems of the old act was that 25% of the accused where being held on remand, which meant that 25% of the inmates at prison where yet to be found guilty or not guilty. The new bail act of 2014 makes bail resolutions based on whether the accused is an “unacceptable risk” to society, this is when they would not turn up to court or interfering with witnesses, the victim and evidence. The new act is now easier to follow, which helps with bail being considered if the accused is not an “unacceptable risk”. An example of this is when a 22-year-old mother was charged with murder of a toddler, did not appear in court when needed, yet she is applying for bail. The mothers bail would be denied because she is an “unacceptable risk” since she did not show up for court when she was alleged to. This shows the value of the new law reform and how it can make sure that the accused get the bail befitting to their
