Clayton High School’s PRIDE AND PREJUDICE captures the fun of Jane Austen’s original novel. The close dramedy of the show is wonderfully amusing and light, and the choice to perform in the Little Theater ¾ round Black Box was a good one bringing the intimate drama ever closer to the audience. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is a show that wrings it’s dramatic tension out of people who wish to find love, and even in the face of it deny it. Clayton’s production captures this excellently. The set was surprisingly minimalistic, which isn’t bad, but there are many places that PRIDE AND PREJUDICE goes, and with the stark staging it’s left up to the actors to really create the environment, and while some of it was less believable it still works. In some of the outdoor settings the approach really doesn’t work especially when the staging starts to get repetitive. However, there is an upside to this. The small scale staging allows the more intimate drama of the show to accentuated, and as the actors continue to move around the area it invokes an almost Spielbergian use of dialogue, and movement. Since the characters kept moving the show almost never slowed down. The sound effects, and the lighting may have been lacking, but the movement and staging certainly benefits the show, and really brings up the techwork. But all of that is blown out of the water by the beautifully lush costume design. The costumes are a triumph popping from the stage creating an exciting atmosphere.
