A mentor/mentee relationship is an extremely important one when it comes to a career in public safety. Being a new member of a public safety agency can be daunting, but being placed with a mentor who has worked for the agency will only be beneficial. The relationship should be strong, as the mentor has been with the agency for a while and knows public safety work inside and out, the mentee is new and still has the drive to push themself. Without a strong relationship the mentor will not benefit from the new mentees mentality, and the mentee will not benefit from the mentors experience. By understanding my strengths and weaknesses it will allow me to learn better be focusing more on the areas that I am weak in, but also allowing me to get even better at my strengths. Through knowing my strengths and weaknesses my expectations are that I will only be a better mentee, as I will know when to ask questions on things I don’t know. For myself being open to learning is a huge part of being a mentee because without the will or want to learn there is no point in having a mentor. A mentor is there to facilitate in my learning process of public safety, and if I go into the career thinking I know everything I will surely fail. When learning from my mentor I want to be able to put myself in a position to be fully invested in what the mentor has to offer with their experiences. This expectation is to ensure that the short time I am with my mentor I can fully grasp the career of a public safety officer, rather than have to learn it all on my own. If we do not learn from our past than we are bound to make the same
