As presented in the constitution, an individual must be a set age to serve as a senator, representative, or president. A senator must be at least 30 years old; a representative must be at least 25, and the president must be 35 or older. Although there is a minimum age for all elected officials there is no age cap. With age, humans are prone to weakening mentally and physically. As humans age they also get a different perspective on the world and are more likely not to understand the current events. According to the Mayo Clinic (2022), a highly rated medical healthcare company, as age increases the body's muscles and bones will eventually worsen along with stability and balance. The brain also changes which may cause thinking skills and memory to worsen (Mayo Clinic, 2022). The jobs elected officials are required to have thinking skills and memory; an example is that the president must approve every bill. The president has the power to veto or sign any bill given to him and he must critically think about whether this will benefit the country. Moreover, senators must think about how to make these bills so that the president won't just veto their bill. Physical and mental wear starts to show around 65 potentially causing a risk to the American citizens who are counting on the elected officials. Since being an elected official requires critical thinking skills the officials must have these skills sharpened and not dulled, so that America can thrive. Elected officials also have a job that results in a great deal of stress. If you look at the before and after of the United States presidents before their term and after, It's clear that because of the stress they significantly aged. If the body is stressed, it will block telomers, leading to rapid aging. The fear is that the older the candidates may be the harder they will have with the job. The first would be that the bill would create prejudice against older people resulting in ageism. The bill would create discriminating laws legally to not allow citizens of the United States to be officials. There would be a huge backlash against the bill since there would be discrimination against a large group of people. Just because an induvial is older doesn’t mean that they can’t operate. Many older individuals are sharp as a whistle and don’t show their age at all. On the other hand, there are quite a few positives if an age cap was introduced. Ideologically the United States would be the same if an age cap was created. A study from Sam Peltzman (2019), current editor of the Journal of Law and Economics and former professor at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business found that as age increases the more conservative an individual will become (Peltzman 2019). The creation of the age cap will not change the ideology of America because an older conservative senator will probably just be replaced by a younger conservative. This is positive because the change wouldn’t drastically change America's ideology making it so that both parties would still be functioning. Another positive of the reform is that a larger group would be able to speak their voice.
