The Story of an Hour Mrs. Mallard in Story of an Hour had many different emotions toward that death of her husband. One of those emotions was a sense of freedom. However, the sense of freedom was one that was forbidden. One of the themes in this story was the prohibited emotion of independence. The prohibited emotion of independence is a theme based on her denial, her newfound thoughts, and the reason she really died. When Ms. Mallard realizes that she is finally free and has independence, she tries to deny and fight it. I say this because when she enters her room, she focuses on everything else. She couldn’t keep her mind on one thing. She didn’t want to feel this feeling. Which makes it seems as if the feelings forming are prohibited. After a couple of minutes have passed, she lets those feelings flourish in her mind. She starts to think of her new days. “Her fancy was running riot along those days ahead of her. Spring days, and summer days, and all sorts of days that would be her own.” (Chopin, 2) She started letting this feeling take over her body. “and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory.” (Chopin, 2) She started to love the idea of this prohibited emotion that she even does a prayer for a long life to enjoy these new days. Lastly, when read about Mrs. Mallard’s death, there are so many missing pieces. We don’t know how she how really dies. I believe that Mrs. Mallard died from prohibited emotion of independence.
