MY SUPERPOWER I still reminisce about one of the happiest moments of my life like it was yesterday. It was one rainy evening during July 2014. I was in Japan do to volunteer work, in order to understand better the culture of the language that I am majoring in. Some friends and I were biking home under the heavy Japanese rain, after a long day of work and before an even longer one ahead of us. In that moment, I started smiling. I looked around me, nothing but kilometers of fields and some typical Japanese houses; I fathomed how comfortable I felt in that environment. A new place, yet so familiar. I felt free, and it was then that I realized the greatness of the love that I feel for what I chose to do, and the university path that I embarked in; because that is what led me there. That month in Japan was one of the occasions in which I had the opportunity to learn more about myself by interacting with a foreign language and culture. In that case, I also learned many new concepts. Such as living with and like traditional Japanese families, cultivating, doing manual work, etc. Another chance that I was given, was my year abroad in Japan to study at Tohoku University. In fact, I speak five languages, some better than others. Certain people think that this ability might be futile to find an employment in the future, but not me. I consider it my super power. I think in English more than in my mother tongue, know Japanese people’s way of thinking, and I can somehow manage to have conversations in Spanish and French. Another pleasure deriving from being in a linguistics field of studies, is that it can lead you to immerse in another culture, understand it, live in it. You can be a multitude of
