The news media play a significant role in the safety for the pubic by showing information about what is going around the community and even the world, and because of this many people (the viewer) has helped his or her community by reporting a murderer or robber they spotted. However, this coverage raises some concerns as to what exactly the media should show or to write about when it comes to reporting about a victim. Victims and many people have found that maybe the media should respect their privacy and do not over glamorize them. However, we should not restrict media coverage of trauma, disaster and crime from the restriction it already has. Now the Internet has evolved into a medium of its own and you cannot only just go on it on your desktop but on your laptop, tablet, phone and now even watch. There are countless of videos of victims being brutally murdered and it is all because someone decided to press record on their smart phone, send it to a popular social media site, and the after math of that are countless of arrest and awareness. According to Lianna Gutz, “Social activism in the digital age is changing the way police brutality is seen in the media…In the case of Ferguson, the police department could have covered up the shooting of Michael Brown had it not been for citizens protesting…Support through social media can put pressure on governments and police departments to be transparent…” Now many cities have initiated cameras to put in front of police officer’s vest to make sure there are not any “mistakes” like those police officers have done in the past. Also, the victims families never once ever complained about the videos and images of their love one’s passing away due to violence in fact they have made, joined many peaceful marches and spoke against violence and have thanked the people that filmed it because if not, many people would still be roaming around with that secret, and the victims family wondering what happened and how did their love one end up
