On the night of August 9th, 2014, Michael Brown, a young unarmed black teenager, was killed by a Caucasian police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. The police officer, Darren Wilson, shot at Brown six times, killing him for no justifiable reason. The result of this tragic shooting led to the famous riots that were going on in Ferguson at the time. As seen in the past decade, police brutality has become a major issue in America. Police brutality is the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers that utilize their power of authority to hurt and abuse civilians, both verbally and physically. Police officers are known to serve and protect but for the past couple of years the tables have turned and many inhumane cases of police brutality have been taking place all around the world. Since police officers are already permitted to use force, they usually get away with it when used extremely and unnecessarily. Social media has been fulfilling the role of present reporting, using social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to raise awareness and cause people to converse about the problems today concerning police brutality. All the riots in Ferguson, Missouri in relation to the shooting of Michael Brown have led people wondering if there needs to be improved surveillance on the police. A “Mike Brown Law” petition has been sent to the White House stating that all police officers shall wear a built in camera on their body armor to record all street encounters with people. Many mobile applications regarding police brutality have been created and can be easily downloaded from almost any smartphone. Recently, an app called Five-O has been created and people use it to rate any policemen from A to F, and they can also write their experience with that certain officer.
