The discussion led by Anthony, Tai, Justin and Diego was one of my favorite class led discussions. Poverty, welfare and privilege are all relevant topics which are present in the United States today. Despite the United States of America being classified as one country, there is great variation in levels of opportunity, poverty and privilege.
Privilege is an aspect of life which we often loose sight of. We become so accustomed to the way we live that we forget how privileged we really are. During the discussion I brought up that we are privileged to have two arms and two legs. We take this for granted but some people on this planet live each day without limbs. This advanced the discussion to focus on the inequality in America and how privileged people should help the less privileged. I believe this topic would have led to a thought-provoking debate. Perhaps if we discussed this in the classroom rather than outside the conversation would have been able develop. Moreover, the addition of statistics comparing the lowest and highest incomes within America would have been beneficial to the conversation. Using the information given in the PowerPoint, I able to create comparisons and similarities with the United Kingdom benefits system. In my opinion, it would have been beneficial to include another country’s procedures regarding welfare. As a class we could have then evaluated the positive and negatives aspects of each and created a system which we believed to be the most reasonable and effective.
