I would like to thank you very dearly for the one million dollars you have given me to further the causes of a few progressive reforms. Unfortunately, by your request I was only able to donate to three causes; but I do believe I have decided to donate to three very worthy causes. In this letter, I will detail to you the three reforms I have decided to donate to and why each deserves the amount of money I have given it. Initially, I was at a loss as to which deserved which amount of money, but I think I have decided justly. The three causes I have decided to donate to are as follows: Food Safety, Child Labor, and Women’s Suffrage.
I have picked Food safety to be the reform which I donate the most money: $600,000. The conditions in which our food is packaged and prepared are truly vile and wretched. Rats run over the meat and foods with reckless abandon, meat is thrown about on the floor where it picks up dust and is stepped and spit on, and rat poison is found mingling with the products. Children are most always impressionable and can grow into philanthropists, scholars, and many other things, but their opportunities of growth are stamped out because they must work from an early age to support their family. Children face terrible conditions in the factories in which they work, and many even die. Additionally, children are not able to attend primary school and higher education because they are too busy working and breaking their backs to help their families. With $300,000, more committees like the National Child Labor Committee could be created and help pass laws to protect children and keep them from working from such a young age. Along with that, money could be used to enroll children in school and buy them supplies to better their education. With this money, a new generation of progressives can grow to help create a near-Utopian
