The Industrial Revolution, lasting from the late 1700s until the early 1900s, was possibly one of the greatest time periods in this world’s history. This time period caused people to think more and dream bigger. From these big dreams rose up inventors, entrepreneurs, and business owners. The Industrial Revolution brought many new inventions and production processes, but along with great new things come great terrible horrors. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the new production methods and what they produced, it was actually a negative thing for society.
“Child labor and poverty are inevitably bound together and if you continue to use the labor of children as the treatment for the social disease of poverty, you will have both poverty and child labor to the end of time” (Grace Abbott). The issue of child labor has been around for centuries. Its standing in our world has been irrevocably stained in our history and unfortunately, our present. Many great minds have assessed this horrific issue and its effect on our homes, societies, and ultimately, our world.
This was at a time when there were no laws for child labor. Child labor was treacherous and some important people stepped in to stop it. These working conditions were hazardous and the kids were not safe. Child labor affects the child’s mental and physical health and it keeps children from struggling in school.(Doc. 7) Also, the reason why there were so many accidents in factories is because there were no safety regulations and requirements for uniforms.(Doc. 2)

Kids need to learn, but in the late 1800s and early 1900s kids were skipping school to work and earn money for their family. During this time period, many children were hired to work in awful and dangerous sweatshops. Very often the kids were in threatening and horrific conditions.
Labor in the Industrial Revolution was dangerous for children because the children were abused by employers and overlookers, they were deprived of their childhood, and injuries were very common. Child abuse in the workplace was common during the Industrial Revolution. Children were affected either mentally, or physically by their employers and overlookers. This was stated in Document C, “The sons and a man named Swann, the overlooker, used to go up and down the mill with sticks. Frank once beat he till frighten himself.”
One of the negative factors regarding the Industrial Revolution in our society is child labor. Children were taken out of there homes to work in factories and farms.
As the rate of industrialization in America grew during the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries, child labor became more and more common. The rapid growth of the economy and the vast amounts of poor immigrants during the Industrial Age in America justified the work of children as young as the age of three. By 1900, over two million children were employed. However, the risks of involving child labor greatly outweighed the positives; child labor was inhumane, cruel, and caused physical deformities among children. Children typically worked in coal mines, mills, and factories which contained many life-threatening hazards.
Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.
Many parents needed their wages to make ends meet. In Document C from The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets by Jane Adams 1909, Jane states how children enter factory life when the law allows them to, and children end up not having childhoods. She writes that people are so caught up with the marvelous achievements of their industry and end up forgetting the children who have to work to help out as well. In Document G, a court case Hammer v. Dagenhart 1918, the father of two sons one under fourteen years old and another one between fourteen and sixteen explains his concern about the exploitation of his children in a cotton mill. He says its concerning that children are allowed to work more than eight hours a day and six days a week.
Child laborers often work for long hours and little paid due to the fact that they are easy to either manage or control by adults. In the late 1800s, the Industrial Revolution was brought to the United States from Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was a time period which brought people from the rural areas to the city. Most manufacturing took place in people’s homes using home-made tools, and basic machines. Henceforth, innovation was needed to speed the process of making clothes, enhancing the transportation system, better mass production of iron and more.
Child Labor The industrial revolution was a big point in history. As machines began to complete tasks formerly done by adults they involved children in working the heavy machines. Children are so young and so fragile that it is even sickening to think they’d be working in factories with big machines. A child only knows so much about the world and learns more as he or she grows. The industrial revolution was a time when very important inventions were benefiting society in a positive way.
Child Labor Part 1 Children in America always had to work. When they lived with their family on a farm, they had to do their fair share of work in order to keep up with payments. As the industrial revolution began to change the economy, people became more urbanized. In order to pay for food and housing, the kids had to work in factories. The reason why there were so many jobs for children in the factories was that the owners could pay them less than an adult, and the children are less likely to go on strike.
Child labor was a great concern in the Industrial revolution but very few people did something to stop it. Women and Children were forced to work more than 10 hours a day with only forty minutes to have lunch. Elizabeth Bentley once said that they didn’t have any time to have breakfast or drink anything during the day. They worked standing up and if they didn’t do their work on time they were strapped (whipped). Children were treating like they were not important, like they didn’t deserve a better life.
Child labor. A topic widely frowned upon, may be beneficial when executed properly. Employing children can possibly provide stability and safety to a child, and opportunities for their communities to advance. In its simplest form, child labor can be beneficial to communities and families when laws and rights are respected. Keeping children off of the streets is a benefit having to do with child labor.
