Literature Review
The term “school shooting” is the scariest term a parent that has children in school can hear. It is a paralyzing term that grabs the attention of the whole country and puts fear in every children’s mind that watches the news. The shooters come in a sorts of variety. They can act alone, or they can act with a partner, or they can work with multiple people. But all of the shooters have the same thing in common, which is to kill, harm, scare, and seek revenge. Society plays a huge role on the school shootings as well (Klein, 2012). In most of the school shooting incidences, there is a reason why the shooter did what they did, and the reason isn’t really that hard to understand. Most were bullied and the effects of bullying caused them to have mental health problems (Simon & Olsen, 2014). Others want to be known by everyone and want the notoriety, which can be linked to bullying. It is because society allows it. Society allows bullying. Most teachers usually just look the other way because kids will be kids (Moore, 2003). Society also allows people to just buy guns whenever they want to because the Second Amendment allows them to. In Virginia, it is against the law to purchase a gun if you have been institutionalized with a mental illness (Welford, Pepper, Petrie, 2004). Cho Seung-Hui was diagnosed with severe panic anxiety and should have been institutionalized after a stalking incident. But due to a high volume of patients, he was not institutionalized (Davies, 2008). This resulted in him being able to purchase multiple guns and ammunition. Christian Helms father already had a shotgun, but it was easy for a fourteen-year old kid to purchase shotgun shells
