Isolation & Loneliness Teaches In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character, Melinda goes through a phase of isolation and silence as a way to cope with the trauma of surviving sexual assault. “The Seventh Man” is a short story by Haruki Murakami where the main character is the narrator who tells his story of loneliness, fear and trauma after seeing his closest childhood friends drown. Macbeth is the main character in the play, The Tragedy of Macbeth. In the play, Macbeth goes through isolation after losing the trust of many for murderous crimes. He continues, their lives were meaningless because they were lost in the trust of plenty, leaving them alone with each other. Macbeth finishes by saying they both were fools to waste their lives. “She should have died hereafter./There would have been a time for such a word/ Creeps in this petty pace from day to day/ To the last syllable of recorded time,/ And all our yesterdays have lighted fools/ The way to dusty death. It leaves readers wondering about the loneliness that took Lady Macbeth over, and how horribly it changed Macbeth’s life. It can be seen how one can want to escape isolation but get trapped by it because of other emotions. Anderson uses excellent detail in this quote, making it easier for readers, especially younger readers, to connect with the main character and her goal. It’s displayed beautifully, and draws attention from many like teachers, students, children, adults and more. Nonetheless, Laurie Halse Anderson not only properly presents the theme of isolation and loneliness, but also the effects it has on someone trying to release themselves from the grasp of it. Just like, Haruki Murakami who uses his main character to portray isolation and loneliness. The main character becomes sick after seeing his childhood friend drown. Still caught by the shock of it all, he is in a state of lonely uncertainty. This causes him not to communicate with others as much as he would like to, mild cases of confusion and a heavy depression.
