How is it that two entirely different people form a special bond that is unique just to them? In “The Day of The Butterfly” by Alice Munro there are two characters that have lots of similarities, but much more differences. Their names are Myra and Helen, and though they are very different in regards to interests, ambitions, and personality, they both have special traits that they share. In the story you learn that the narrator, Helen, is in grade six along with Myra. She has a brother named Jimmy who is much younger than them, in grade one, and is very dependent on his sister. Helen has a brother as well, but he is not as shy as Jimmy and not dependent on her. Their ambitions for the future are different, as Myra said that she wants to help her mother in the fruit store as a job, while Helen wants to become an airplane hostess. It is unknown whether Myra really wants to do this as a job or if she is just saying she’s going to help her mother because she is unsure of what she really wants to do, or if she doesn’t know anything else. That puts to question her amount of ambition, especially in comparison to Helen who knows what she wants to do. Helen is also more interested in subjects like Social Studies, Spelling, and Health while Myra likes Art and Arithmetic and is worried that she is going to fail Spelling. They also have different birthstones, which means they have different birthdays as well. Helen’s birthstone is a sapphire which means that her birthday is in September, and Myra has a July birthday with her birthstone is a ruby. They also seem to have a different home life, as Myra’s family are immigrants who work in a store, whereas it seems like Helen has lived in the town most of her life and has what the rest of the girls in her class would call “a normal
