“Peace for our time.” - Neville Chamberlain (Sources of British History) Chamberlain’s famous statement came after the historic Munich deal. This former British Prime Minister exemplifies that people will go to great lengths to achieve peace. Another example lies in the Roman empire. Rome was no stranger to far reaching laws or social reforms in the name of creating a peaceful empire, but they were not always successful. In fact, they often harmed more than they healed. Rome fell because a corrupt and inept government leading a weakened military protected an empire cripplingly dependent on slave labor. The Pax Romana. A time of peace for an entire empire. Roman leaders were just and fair. (Fall of Rome, Rome.info) However, nothing lasts forever. As Rome degraded, its emperors became increasingly incompetent. They had to tax their citizens to incredulous extents in order to cover up their mishaps.
